Laois - Glenbarrow Old Mill Loop
Doireann Ní Ghlacáin journeys into the heart of Ireland’s midlands, where she is joined by the prominent broadcaster, Claire Byrne. Together they explore the scenic Slieve Bloom Mountains uncovering landscapes rich in memory, heritage, and personal meaning.
Returning to her native County Laois, Claire Byrne walks the Glenbarrow Old Mill Loop, a 10.5km trail that winds through forest, waterfalls, and ancient ruins. For Claire, the experience is deeply personal, especially as memories of her late father surface: “Coming back here I really think of him, it’s lovely to be here… and feel the connection to him up here.”
Beginning at the source of the River Barrow, Ireland’s second-longest river, the walk features the dramatic Clamp Hole Waterfall, the haunting ruins of a 19th-century mill, and the evocative remains of the Lost Village, where fifteen families once lived. A memorial plaque marks the former home of the Clear family, offering a poignant reminder of those who came before. The trail ends at the Ridge of Capard, where a boardwalk reveals sweeping views across Laois, Offaly and beyond. Claire is clearly at home here and grateful to be showcasing the county’s beauty: “I’m actually really proud of it, that we have this in Laois.”
