Limerick Greenway - Abbeyfeale to Rathkeale

Doireann Ní Ghlacáin explores the rich rural and urban contrasts of County Limerick starting with a 40km cycle along the scenic Limerick Greenway. She’s joined for the journey by Barry Murphy, former Irish rugby international and frontman of Limerick band Hermitage Green, whose deep love for his home county shines throughout the episode.

Starting in Abbeyfeale, Barry and Doireann cycle the beautifully restored Greenway all the way to Rathkeale, stopping at landmarks such as the Desmond Castle Banqueting Hall and the site of the famed Ardagh Chalice discovery. Barry draws thoughtful parallels between his experiences on the rugby field and as a musician, speaking openly about how both passions helped him express himself: “I think I’ve always been quite emotional…as a sportsperson that’s what I’m doing too, expressing myself. It’s about getting those emotions out.” His love of history and storytelling adds depth to the journey, as he shares unexpected tales rooted in the local landscape.
